Overtime and weekend shift wording in job adverts: literacy for recruiters, not a verdict

“Must be flexible”, “regular overtime essential”, and “including weekends as required” appear on warehouse, care, and retail drafts — often without stating hours, pay band, or notice. This guide helps you read what those lines signal to candidates and tighten wording before the board goes live. Wording literacy only — not legal advice and not Equality Act clearance.

Try it on your draft. Paste the hours and flexibility paragraph into the free check before publish.

Why vague hours lines get flagged

Candidates with caring responsibilities, religious observance, or second jobs read “flexible availability” as a filter — even when you only meant peak-season cover. Vague overtime wording also clashes with clearer part-time lines elsewhere on the draft. See part-time hours and flexible wording if that file exists on your desk; sync board fields with body copy via remote, hybrid and on-site wording.

Common patterns on UK job ads

Pattern on draftWhat candidates may readRewrite toward
“Flexible hours essential”Open-ended availabilityNamed shift pattern: e.g. Tue–Sat, 06:00–14:00
“Regular overtime required”Unpaid or unpredictable extra hoursTypical OT range, paid at rate, average hours/month
“Must work weekends”Every weekend without exception“1 in 2 Saturdays” or rota summary
“Ad hoc hours as business needs”Zero-hour feel on a permanent adCore hours + when peaks happen (e.g. Christmas)
“Own transport for early starts”Car ownership filterSee own car and local candidates

Desk habit: separate must-have hours from preferences

  1. Highlight every hours, overtime, and weekend line in the person spec.
  2. Mark each as essential shift requirement or occasional peak cover.
  3. Align salary band text — see salary band and benefits wording — so OT expectations match pay framing.
  4. Check the equal-opportunities footer still matches the body — EO line vs title.
  5. Paste the revised draft into VacancyCheck before multi-board publish. Prefer paste over live URL pre-publish.

Agency desks: client brief vs live ad

Clients sometimes paste “must be available 24/7” from operational notes. Edit before it becomes the Indeed body — see client brief vs agency job ad. Step 3 on the pre-publish checklist covers hours clarity.
