DBS check wording in job adverts: literacy for recruiters, not a verdict
“Enhanced DBS required”, “must be on update service”, “clean DBS essential” — safeguarding roles need checks, but the public advert is still read by candidates before they know your process. This guide helps recruiters read DBS wording on drafts: level clarity, timing (apply vs offer stage), and lines that sound like person filters. Literacy only — not DBS legal advice and not Equality Act clearance.

DBS on the advert vs at offer stage
Many desks correctly run DBS after conditional offer. The advert can still mention that a check forms part of safer recruitment — without sounding like a blanket ban on applicants with any recorded history. Separate:
- Role requirement — enhanced DBS with barred-list check for regulated activity.
- Process timing — “required prior to start” vs “must hold certificate before applying”.
- Update service — optional efficiency note vs impossible pre-apply gate.
Security-clearance roles use different vocabulary — see security clearance wording. Right-to-work lines are separate again — right to work wording.
Common patterns on UK job ads
| Pattern on draft | Reading question | Desk habit |
|---|---|---|
| “Enhanced DBS required” | Which level and workforce? | Name level; note check follows safer recruitment policy |
| “Must have clean DBS” | Informal filter language | Rewrite toward role-appropriate check level |
| “DBS within last 12 months” | Pre-apply certificate gate | Clarify if update service acceptable |
| “No convictions” blanket line | Person filter on advert | Human review — may belong in policy not board |
| “DBS paid by candidate” | Cost clarity | State employer policy if you reimburse at offer |

Overlap with health and disability wording
DBS lines sitting beside “fit and healthy”, “no medical issues”, or “fully fit” paragraphs create a dense requirements block — see disability and health wording and fully fit warehouse lines. Keep safeguarding checks distinct from physical ability labels tied to the person.
Agency desks: client brief paste
School and care clients often paste policy PDFs into the job body. Edit before the board goes live — client brief vs agency job ad. One safeguarding sentence plus contract detail off-board is usually enough for literacy hygiene.
