Driving licence requirements in UK job ads — wording hygiene before publish
“Must hold a full UK driving licence”, “clean licence essential”, and “own car required” lines appear on field sales, care, engineering and warehouse-supervisor drafts every week. This guide is a pre-publish self-check: tie the licence to the task, flag blanket transport lines, and paste the draft before it goes live. Not legal advice. Not Equality Act clearance.

When a driving licence line is job-related
A licence requirement is clearer when it states why driving is needed on shift — not as a proxy for reliability or flexibility:
- Field visits — “Valid UK driving licence required to travel between client sites in [region]”.
- Mobile equipment — “Licence required to operate company vehicle on public roads between depots”.
- On-call cover — “Licence required for emergency call-out travel; company vehicle provided”.
Contrast with vague lines: “driver essential”, “must drive”, “own transport” on a desk-based role — these deserve a human rewrite toward the actual travel need.
Patterns worth a second look
- “Clean licence only” — may indirectly relate to disability or spent convictions depending on context. Flag for HR review; do not treat a scan as a legal verdict.
- “Own car required” when a company pool vehicle exists — inconsistent requirements confuse candidates and attract wording-risk flags.
- Category-specific licences — HGV/LGV mentions on non-HGV roles, or “automatic only” without a task reason.
- Licence + age combo — “young driver with clean licence” stacks age-coded phrasing with transport. See age-coded titles guide.
- Blanket “mobile role” — covers sales, engineer and care roles differently; specify travel frequency and geography.
Rewrite prompts (human review)
| Common draft line | Rewrite toward |
|---|---|
| “Must have own car” | “Regular travel between sites in X; mileage reimbursed / company vehicle provided” |
| “Driver essential” | “Valid UK driving licence required for [specific travel task]” |
| “Clean UK licence, no points” | “Licence valid for company insurance purposes for [vehicle type]” — HR to confirm policy |
| “Non-driver need not apply” | Remove; state travel requirement positively |
Seven-step pass before publish
Use alongside the full pre-publish checklist:
- Confirm driving is genuinely required on day one — not a legacy line from an old template.
- State the travel task, frequency, and geography.
- Separate licence requirement from vehicle provision (company car vs allowance vs own vehicle).
- Check the same draft for conflicting lines (“hybrid office-based” + “daily site travel essential”).
- Paste final draft into VacancyCheck for pattern flags.
- HR or hiring manager sign-off — tool output is not clearance.
- Archive the signed draft; re-run if the live ad changes.
What this guide is not
- Not legal advice on indirect discrimination or insurance law.
- Not Equality Act clearance.
- Not a promise the advert is safe to publish.
